ABOUT COMmISSION
SOUNDkitchen’s Cut & Fade is a site-specific soundwalk in Smethwick that will be hosted on the SOUNDwalker App. Along the Bearwood Road, SOUNDkitchen discovered a high density of barbers and hairdressers serving the diverse local community. Cut & Fade documents some of these businesses through a series of sonic portraits. Using the SOUNDwalker map and GPS, walkers are invited to visit each business where audio tracks will transport them inside the salon to hear the activity and conversations of clients and staff tending to their hair and beauty routines.
Produced by SOUNDkitchen co-directors Annie Mahtani and Iain Armstrong.
This commission is part of the Forge Artist Open Call Programme which invited 12 West Midlands artists and/or curators to make new bodies of work for the Blast! Festival and take part in a mentorship programme.

ARTIST BIO
SOUNDkitchen is a collective of Birmingham based artists with an interest in experimental electronic music and sound art. They create sound installations, perform their own music and curate live music events. SOUNDkitchen also create soundwalks where participants follow a specified route, listening to sounds in the environment and sound recordings. These can be guided walks or digitally hosted on their SOUNDwalker smartphone App. The App is free to download and currently hosts several other Birmingham soundwalks.
